Paris Street; Rainy Day

Gustave Caillebotte Paris Street Rainy Day

This Gustave Caillebotte painting is one of my all time favorites. It shows a unglamorous side of my favorite city, but it’s still so magical. I love how you can feel the wetness. If you’re ever in Chicago, go visit this piece at the Art Institute…I could stand in front of it all day.

Aside from the absence of cars and the top hats, Paris is just the same in the rain now as it was in 1877. It’s grey and wet, but you still feel the magic of the city. Les grands boulevards are actually that grand. Dirt and cigarettes get trapped in between the cobblestone, but it’s still Paris cobblestone and it has so much history. Rainy days were some of my favorite while living there. Maybe because I was outside no matter what every day. No retreating to a couch and a TV. I walked every arrondissement in the rain. Stopped for an espresso or a book store. Crossed bridges. Went through several cheap black umbrellas. Faced fears and learned it’s lovely to be alone.

Even if it’s raining the whole time, I’d go back right away. Paris is my favorite in the fall. In the rain. Allons-y.

Daily Inspiration

One can find so many pains when the rain is falling John Steinbeck

This quote by John Steinbeck couldn’t be more true. You can easily feel lonely and reflective during a rain storm. But I also have found many great things today through the rain and I’m very thankful for them. Now just have to brave the rest of the storm. What are you doing to pass the time inside? Stay safe, warm, and dry!

Happy Weekend

rainy cozy snowy halloween fall weather season leaves orange red pumpkin tea woolTime to grab a hot cup of tea and a wool blanket…it’s going to be a yucky and cold weekend. It might even snow later today…what?? Despite the weather, I’m totally inspired by these fall hues – pumpkin orange and burnt red, paired with cozy ivory and heather. So yummy.

What are your weekend plans? I’m not a big Halloween fan, so I’m embracing the weather and wearing jeans, Uggs, a sweater and a tiara AKA “Kate Middleton gone undercover to go to the movies.” At least I’ll be warm and comfy, right?

Be safe, have fun and stay warm and dry. xo!

Please don’t stop the rain

Midnight in Paris rain rainy day weekend Friday

Just kidding. I’d like it to stop sometime. Although I’m kind of enjoying it at the moment. My Friday rainy day song is “Please Don’t Stop the Rain” by James Morrison. Go listen to it. That album is perfect music for today.

Days like this remind me of the fall I spent in Paris. Ducking in and out of little shops in an undiscovered neighborhood. Spending an afternoon watching people pass by and watching the water fall down the windows from inside my regular corner cafe. Secretly loving the grayness of the city.

I also still haven’t seen Midnight in Paris. I must do that.

Let it fall, let it fall, let it fall.
