Growing up I was obsessed with color. No surprise there. I absolutely thought the best room accessory was a box of 96 Crayola Crayons…unused and perfectly pointy. I wasn’t color shy. And I loved bold, bright colors. While I guess I appreciated them, pastels weren’t my favorite.
When I was in 7th or 8th grade Pottery Barn Teen debuted their first catalog. I devoured those pages over and over and then I sat down at my blueberry iMac and wrote and sent them a 10-page letter in response. I told them what furniture I liked and which pieces I thought could use some improvements. I suggested new products and told them how I thought they were the greatest thing to appear in my mailbox. I even included photos and drawings. After all, I was the savvy, DIY-er, decorating-loving 13 year old they were marketing to, right?
One comment I specifically remember making was that they needed to change their color palette. Not all teenage girls like lavender, light pink and baby blue (although that’s Justin Timberlake’s favorite color, so I did understand). I urged them to make their textiles in plum, hot pink, and indigo. Those, I’d buy…er, have my mom buy.
I recalled this last night as I crawled into my cozy bed which is currently dressed with a lavender comforter and soft lavender sheets. (Minor fluke…I don’t really like matchy-matchy.) But It was calming and soothing. And I realized I do love decorating with lavender now, and even though hot pink and plum are still my favorite colors, I appreciate how my style and taste have evolved over the past 11 years.
I’m also proud to say PB Teen has plenty of bold, bright colors in their catalog now.
Ok enough rambling…time for some pretty pictures.
