Mad for Mad Mac

I have to be honest. I didn’t love my first French macaron…possibly because it was rose flavored, which tasted like eating perfume. But it has been two years since I studied abroad in Paris for a semester and had that first macaron, standing outside Ladurée on the busy Champs-Élysées so the memory of the popular cookie has faded.

For my birthday this weekend, my mom gave me two boxes of macarons from Mad Mac, an “authentic French madeleine and macaron” company based in NJ. Biting into a hazelnut one, I remembered immediately what I learned to love about the delicate and sweet cookies in Paris. They actually aren’t too expensive ($18 for a box of 12) and I think they’re totally worth it if you aren’t up to trying to make them yourself. I loved the hazelnut, but the lemon and vanilla were also fantastic. (Also, I have to note that they’re gluten free, which is great for my friends over at Delight!)

I’m officially mad for macs again. (Watch out French Twist DC!) Have you had a Mad Mac? What do you think?

Easter Basket Tablescape

Ok, I don’t like using the word tablescape. Reminds me too much of Sandra Lee. But still, I had so much fun creating this dessert table for Easter. Most everyone who got an Easter “basket” was between 15 and 30 years old, but it was still a cute way to send everyone back (to college or DC) with some sweets. I separated the colorful candies into different glass bowls and printed garden “stakes” with their names on them. Of course, the dyed eggs were the center of it all. I’d love to get the chance to do more things like this more often! Check out the photos below.

Holiday Baking

cupcakes

Starting to think about holiday baking. I’ll make my usual assortment of Christmas cookies to give as gifts to friends, but what’s new this year?

I know it’s still a little early to begin thinking about the holidays but I always start early. My huge family is getting together for Thanksgiving next week and that always gets me cheery and holiday ready. I’m getting in the spirit with my favorite Gap holiday commercial:

Champagne and Frosting

IMG_0669

For the past 17 months, I have been living and breathing yearbook. As the Editor in Chief of George Washington University’s Cherry Tree Yearbook, I had the privilege of creating a beautiful book of memories and traditions for my senior class.

I began this project with a vision – it would be classic, timeless and elegant.  I wanted the book to “taste” like champagne and frosting.

My staff and I chose the theme “reflection” and in the beginning I collected all of my inspirations. Celebrating with bubbly and cupcakes were the start, but I was driven also by pearls, cameos, metallics, sparkle, rich textures, the colors of Ladurée and the classic spirit of GW.

A year ago, I made this collage and it has inspired me through the entire process…

On Friday, I put my red pen down and finished editing the yearbook. It’s going to press soon and will be on my coffee table by November… I can’t believe it!

And so I must celebrate, just like the yearbook calls for. Last night, I made delicious (and fancy, or at least I tried) cupcakes and bought a bottle of champagne. It was the perfect combo and the perfect way to celebrate crossing the finish line. Cheers!

Vanilla Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

The cake recipe was adapted from Martha Stewart

And here’s my I’ll-just-eat-it-off-my-finger cream cheese frosting recipe:

(For 12 cupcakes)

  • 1 eight-ounce package of cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 stick unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  1. Beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth
  2. Add the vanilla extract
  3. Gradually add the sugar and beat until incorporated
  4. Stick your finger into the bowl and lick away
  5. Just kidding… maybe… spread on cooled cupcakes and enjoy!

Sprinkles that look like pearls

A preview of the 2009 Cherry Tree (flocked! ah!) dust jacket… can you see the resemblance?

And finally, I made these gorgeous cupcakes in my beautiful new apartment… the tour will come soon! I’m finally in my own space and though the yearbook is finished, I’ll keep the book’s inspiration around me. That includes this sample of flocked wallpaper from Osborne & Little which I was able to snag from my internship at House Beautiful Magazine.

red, white & blue cupakes!

blue & red layered cake with cream cheese frosting

I’ve wanted to try layered cupcakes for a while now, and the 4th of July was a perfect opportunity. I used a white cake mix because I didn’t have much time… which was good since my first batch came out horribly! I don’t know what went wrong really… could be my crappy oven. Or, does food coloring weigh cake down? Both times my cupcakes had perfect dome tops and while they were cooling they all collapsed.

Good thing cream cheese frosting can camouflage anything! Decorated with blue and red sprinkles and took down to the AMAZING DC firework display at the mall. (Seriously, best ones in 4 years!)

Happy 4th everyone!
