Clean

I have to make some seriously change in my life. Here’s a confession: my apartment is a mess. I think I clean it every weekend, and then during the week, the clothes and dishes and paper and shoes just pile up. Mess, clean, repeat. Now that I only have one day off a week, I really need to reevaluate how I spend that time. The last thing I want to do is spend it cleaning. And when the rest of my life is busy and stressful, the last thing I want to come home to is a busy and stressful apartment…this does not help my sanity.

So I need to make a change. I need to learn to not make a mess. Prepare my outfit the night before so I don’t try on every dress in my closet every morning and don’t hang them back up. Wash my coffee cup before I leave for work. Read and sort my mail each night. Just maintain my personal space so it’s inspiring and comforting.

Have any other tips for keeping a clean house without really thinking about it? How do you keep your space inviting for yourself? Please share…I’ll absolutely try it out and report back.

My Studio Apartment Tour

This post is long overdue but oh well. I’ve received many questions about my studio apartment tour in the Everygirl (mostly about my pink ikat rug!), so I wanted to share a few more photos and provide some of the sources too. My favorite place to shop for my apartment is Home Goods (and Craigslist too), so a lot of those things can’t be sourced. But if I left out anything, leave me a comment and I’ll tell you where it’s from.

I love my little “dressing area” when I step out of bed onto a soft flotaki rug.

When I actually do sit down to write at my desk, it’s a fantastic place to work. But let’s be honest, I’m mostly blogging from my bed or couch.

A wall of windows really provides great light in my apartment and makes it feel so much bigger than it is.

For my wallpaper entry, I tore out full pages of magazines with images I love – food (the fired chicken photo might be my favorite), fashion, interiors, cute boys, colorful designs – and using double sided tape, I put them up in rows. I think there’s about 150 pages up on the wall. I can easily remove one image if I find another one I like.

Also, how embarrassing. I forgot to clean up that messy area above my fridge where I store bags of chips and pans. Oops. :)

If you haven’t already, head over to the Everygirl and read more about my apartment.

Oh, and if you want to see something hilarious, check out this post from 2009 where I share some photos from my then brand new apartment. It feels nice to look back and see how both my apartment and I have grown.

A Girl’s Apartment

One of my favorite compliments I received many times about my apartment tour was how girly it was. I love pink and gold and sparkly things and I’m not going to apologize for it, especially when I get my place all to myself! I recently came across photos of blogger Alexandra Heitz’s apartment and I felt the same way. Unapologetically girly. Love!

I’m an Everygirl

Nikki Rappaport the Everygirl home tour

I couldn’t be more excited to share with you my studio apartment tour on the Everygirl today! Not only have I wanted to share my whole place for a while now, but I’m so thrilled that it’s on the Everygirl – which was started by two girls who I’ve admired for a long time.

So check out my girly DC studio apartment and get to know a little bit more about me and my place. I hope you like it as much as I do!

The Fall Desserts I’d Like to Make…

…but won’t because I have nightmares about finding dead mice all over my kitchen. Gah. I need to just grow up and stop being a frustrated wuss about this, right? I’m working on fixing the problem, but in the meantime I need to just get over it and let the pumpkin and apple smells take me over. I’m trying. Really. So, if I wasn’t totally turned off by baking at home, here are a few things that I’d particularly like to make for you.

Cupcakes for Breakfast: a sweet taste of fall

pecan pie bars | snickerdoodle pumpkin ice cream sandwiches | caramelized apple tart | stacked applesauce cake with cinnamon whipped cream | mini apple pies | apple beignets with caramel sauce | brown butter pumpkin cupcakes with salted caramel frosting
