When I was in high school, my dad used to wake me up every morning at 6am by opening my bedroom door and softly singing “Nik, time to make the doughnuts.”
I think about that almost every morning and smile. And then I want to find the closest doughnut. It’s a bit of an obsession. I get really excited when I see them on a menu and lucky for me, DC has some great doughnuts! Some of my recent faves…

Clockwise: 1. pork belley jelly doughnut from mike isabella at cochon 555 2. Coffee zeppole with mascarpone cream at Graffiato 3. carrot cake doughnuts at virtue feed and grain 4. Doughnut trio at Birch and Barley (lemon poppyseed, toffee-bacon, bittersweet chocolate)
And well, my dad was right, it’s time for me to make doughnuts. It’s a baking project I’ve put off for some time, but now I think I’m ready. While I decide which kind I’ll finally make, here are some of my favorites that I’ve pinned to my Breakfast & Brunch board to get me inspired!
Bite size cinnamon and sugar doughnuts from the British Larder
Vanilla cream filled doughnuts from Martha Stewart
Mini Baked Doughnuts from Kirbie’s Cravings
Nutella-filled doughnuts from Sips and Spoonfuls
Hungry yet? Which of these would you make first?

I just had my first donut in forever at Glazed! in Charleston, SC. It was pretty more amazing (Ok…maybe I sampled 4 different flavors- what else can you do when faced with delicious options?). I’m a bit of a purist, so I might just go for those caked kind with the dusting of cinnamon-sugar. Mmm.
YUM, I want them all!
I have a deep fryer! Want to team up on this project?
…so come to OBX with us this summer and head to Duck Donuts in Corolla…a design-your-own assembly line of warm yummy donuts…it’s now our day of departure obsession!
All of these doughnuts look delicious. I’m going to have to whip out my doughnut pan this weekend and bake up a batch or two! Glazed and cinnamon sugar are my favorites!
Ohh I’m going to need your recipe!
Maybe I WILL come with you to OBX! No beach trips planned at all this year…
Ohh yes! I’ll be in touch!
While this may be more appropriate around the winter holidays, how about Ebelskivers – the wonderful Danish apple donuts? I guess the only other problem is that with those, you need to get a special (and sometimes) expensive cast-iron pan: http://tinyurl.com/7gbvj42.
everything on this post looks deliciously yummy!! i love donuts! cant wait to hear about your donut making adventures!
Why aren’t those Mike Isabella doughnuts magically appearing in front of me!??!
Also, I LOVE the lemon poppy seeds doughnuts from Birch & Barley.
Ummmm carrot cake donuts!? No one told me about these.
Also in “kind of donuts” news: Boqueria will be offering Nutella stuffed churros on their new brunch menu!
Also I hear the donuts at Pearl Dive are amazing—if you can ever actually get in for brunch.
A girl after my own heart! Good luck in your attempt to make them…I tried once a few months ago and failed miserably! I think my yeast has gone dead or something…
Want all. Doughnuts are a guilty pleasure for sure!
Oh goodness, I love donuts so much! I’ve never made them myself though- would love to try the mini baked ones! =)
YUM I love doughnuts!!
I have such fond memories associated with donuts too! If you need someone to help you taste test, especially of the Nutella-filled variety, you know where to find me :)
YUM! The colorful ones are definitely my favorite although I will have to bake up the ones stuffed with Nutella, are you kidding me??? Amazing!
