Dessert at Bourbon Steak

Well this post is very late…. and I don’t have much to say other than go have dessert at Bourbon Steak!

K and I sat outside on their lovely patio and were delighted when we found out they were debuting a new chocolate dessert trio. The pictures will speak for themselves. So, why don’t you go grab some dessert there, while I head back and try everything else on their menu. (I hear their burger is excellent!)

Chocolate Three Ways

Chocolate brownie with rosemary syrup, tuiles, and nutella ice cream.

Seriously amazing and my favorite: the Ovaltine-soaked devil's food cake.

Chocolate mousse with red velvet cake crumbles.

And if you didn't get enough already, more nutella ice cream.

To die for. Is your mouth watering yet?

Ramping Around

I had a foodie faux pas this weekend. I admitted that I had never heard of ramps before. (omg! you’re kidding me?!)

All of a sudden, like they appeared out of nowhere and were the most anticipated thing since the release of No Strings Attached (ok, maybe only I understand that excitement…). After hearing about ramps all over Twitter and reading about their spring debut on Metrocurean I felt like I was missing out on something. I didn’t have to wait much longer until I got to try my first ramps at Poste that night. Eh, they tasted like spinach. Nothing special. (I was focused more on the incredible strawberry rhubarb crumble that was made to order. yum!)

I didn’t expect to give ramps another chance, but when I came across them at the Dupont Circle Farmer’s Market on Sunday (and was so surprised there were any left at 11am with everyone talking about buying them all up) I bought a bunch. Why not, I’ll give it a shot. Ramps are sooo the “in” veggie right now.

So I made creamy parmesan pasta with sautéed ramps and tomatoes. And I think it was some of the best past I’ve ever had. Seriously. Win.

I could really taste the garlic that makes ramps so special. It was a perfect spring dish and although it has heavy cream in it (gotta stop keeping that in my fridge!) it was really light.

I hope there will be more ramps again at the market this Sunday, but if not and the window has closed, I’ll be prepared and waiting for next year.

I couldn’t really tell you the recipe, because I seriously just improvised as I was cooking…. but here’s an idea:

  • Cook pasta in salted water.
  • In a separate pan, sauté grape tomatoes in olive oil until they start splitting.
  • Cut off the bottom white parts of the ramps and sauté in butter until translucent. Add the leafy parts and a little water and continue to cook. Mix in some heavy cream and a lot of parmesan cheese.
  • Add the tomatoes to the ramps and cream sauce and pour over cooked pasta. Add a little more cheese on top.

One Fishs, Two Fishs…

I love fishs. (yes I spelled that right…keep reading)

For my birthday last month, I spent the day in NYC with my parents. We went out for a late lunch/early dinner at Pipa, a great Spanish tapas restaurant before seeing Billy Elliot (ah, fell in love!). The sangria and coquettes were excellent, but so was the decor. Maybe a hundred ornate chandeliers hung from the ceiling, which made sense because it was connected to ABC Carpet & Home. My trip there actually deserves it’s own post because seriously, it was like a rite of passage going there for the first time. (Don’t know how that never happened before!) Fell in love with so many things including a fabulous Maleline Weinrib rug I *must* own one day – that also deserves a post of its own.

My point? I also visited Fishs Eddy for the first time – which must be a NYC favorite and also a rite of passage. I fell in love with this store for its simple kitchen ware and whimsical details. Seriously, it is fantastic. And cheap. And you must go if you love to cook or host. (Bonus points if you live in a teeny tiny Brooklyn apartment.)

I seriously want everything in this store, but here are a few of my favorites…

They have so many colorful cake stands. Love the milk glass ones.

This plate is so adorable! It is almost the exact layout of my studio apartment.

Little colorful "nut" bowls prefect for prep or dipping sauces.

Graphic NYC themed dinnerware.

I actually bought this spoon rest. It says "Rest in Grease" - ah, adorable!

I'd like to slurp some chicken noodle soup from this mug. How fun.

Think I'd bake something every day to display under this perfect cake stand.

How cute is this postcard. It makes me feel grate.

Have you been to Fishs Eddy? Know any other stores that will make me this happy?

A Well Seasoned Whale

How cute are these Jonathan Adler salt and pepper shakers that I got for my birthday from my boyfriend. I have a thing for whales and my round white tabletop was missing both s&p shakers and something whimsical. He really can hit the nail on the head with the right gifts, huh?

(Can also be found at tabletop in DC along with so many other great kitchen finds)
